Join us at the All Saints Heritage Centre for a lecture by filmmaker Katie Mlinek on how the earliest threads of film history connect to today’s modern TikToks. These days we take it for granted that everybody knows or is expected to learn how to read and write, but it wasn’t until the printing press and books became widely available that an idea became standard: everybody can communicate not just through words but also through written language. Now the same thing has happened with visual communication through videos. Commercials, youtube videos, and instagram reels all communicate big ideas in shorter and shorter time spans, all using lessons that came from filmmakers before us. Gather round with us as we watch video essays to explore this fascinating intersection of storytelling, communication, and history.
