Petersburg Outdoor Education & Training Centre

Petersburg Outdoor Education and Training Centre operates under Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board formerly known as County Galway Vocational Education Committee. This organization had the foresight to develop the ruins of the old Lynch family estate on the shores of Lough Mask into a thriving outdoor education facility which attracts visitors from all over the world. Its purpose is the use of the outdoor environment for educational objectives ranging from geological to geographical and ecological studies. Participation in recreational adventure sport promotes healthy and active lifestyles. Personal development is promoted through confidence building activities and working with others is promoted through team-building and a residential experience.

Petersburg cannot achieve its objectives without a clean environment. The work of Clonbur Tidy Towns is crucial to attracting visitors to this part of the world. Petersburg works because it is blessed to be located in one of the most beautiful parts of the world but this is only sustainable if the environment is protected and at its most basic is kept clean and litter free. Pride of Place is crucial in this respect and the volunteers do a great job on a consistent basis. They work tirelessly to benefit and enhance Clonbur as a great place to live and a beautiful place to visit.

There are plans to further develop Petersburg into an outdoor education centre of international status with the building of a field science laboratory. It believes strongly that the recognition of Joyce Country as a Geopark will enhance the reputation of the locality for field studies and further promote the environment and village of Clonbur. In conjunction with the Community Council, Petersburg is working to improve the infrastructure such as the building of a foot path from the centre to the village and campaigning for better broad band. It also has worked to ensure that it plays a central role in village life through its involvement with summer festivals, Christmas fairs and encouraging local participation in outdoor activities through summer camps and open days.

Petersburg wishes to highlight the work of Clonbur Tidy Towns and put on record the great work that is carried out by the volunteer group which operates under the auspices of the Community Council. Petersburg will continue to work with the Community Council to promote and develop Clonbur as a great place to visit and an even better place to live.
